Plans to get out racing again in 2021 are starting to finalise. A big step in the right direction is owning a race car and there is now a tick in that box.
And what a machine it is. A thoroughbred Caterham Seven 420R with all the bells and whistles, meticulously prepared by DPR Motorsport.
I didn’t intend to buy a car just yet as 2021 is still a long way off. But when the right car appeared for sale at the right time, it was too much of a risk not to put in an offer.
As much as I would love to, having just shelled out for the car, I just don’t have the finances to race in 2020, so the plan remains to mount a charge for the 2021 season.
In the mean time, I will be getting out on track through 2020 to get used to the car and get myself prepared. Dad, and the rest of the family, are also pretty excited to get back out on track and to learn how to spanner this new beast.
Although it looks similar from the outside, it is a very different animal underneath from my previous Caterhams.
And, I don’t have to wait too long until it’s first outing, so I’ll be reporting back in a couple of weeks on how it is to drive and just how big the grin on my face gets.

Be very careful if you go out in it in December- it would be a shame to bend it when it’s so cold and slippery!
Will you be sticking with the DPR colour scheme- coz I can’t think of too many green cheeses?!
Also – it’s probably time to drop the ‘Academy’ Racer handle if you’re out in a hairy beast like that in 2021? Hardly a learner car any more!

Loving the green. Looks ace, so keeping it! I know what you mean about cold wet tracks but I love mixed conditions, and if I cock up, there’s plenty of times to fix things.
Footage will be starting to appear soon. You never stop learning and there’s loads more to get stuck into now with more power, sequential gearbox, more grip, bigger brakes, more setup options… it really is a completely different animal so I’m not out of the ‘academy’ just yet :)

I’ve been having a go at a bit of drifting – and seriously enjoying going sideways!
There’s something primitive in the built-in human gyroscope- that seems to generate a massive grin whenever you can get a car sliding – but under a degree of control!!
It’s just the same as when anyone blips the throttle for the first time in a car with a big engine or even just a decent exhaust note – they can’t help but smile…..
Yea, your vids pop up in my YouTube feed and it looks like a lot of fun. I did the Brooklands experience a short while back and the skid pan was a hoot. Like you say, it’s like built in grin machine for some.
